     When a patient is transported by our service, the technicians will ask you for insurance information if you are able to provide.  If not we ask that this information be provided to the hospital or by calling the billing office as soon as possible.  If you do not have any health insurance, you may want to check with the local social & rehabilitation office to determine if you might be eligible for assistance.  If you have no insurance, an invoice will be sent directly to you.  Crawford County EMS billing office submits all claims with the appropriate insurance carrier for both primary and secondary insurances.  Our office often needs to follow up on the claims submitted to determine if /when the claim will be paid or if additional information is needed.

     The insurance carrier maintains the right to deny claims for reasons such as transport was not medically necessary.  If the billing office has the appropriate signature in place, we will request medical records and resubmit the claim, if this would substantiate the need for you to have been transported.  It is important to know that for medicare patients, the primary insurance must consider the claim payable before the secondary will pay on the claim.

     If you are transported following a motor vehicle accident, then there are several things that you need to know.  Kansas is a no fault state, and simply means that injuries received from an accident will be paid by the personal injury protection (PIP) of your insurance, if you are a titled vehicle owner.  If not, the injuries would be paid by the PIP of the vehicle that you were riding in at the time of the accident.  In either case, you or the owner of the vehicle must report the accident to the insurance and complete a personal injury protection application.  Everyone's insurance in Kansas has PIP, even if you only have liability insurance.  This will only pay up to $ 4,500.00 medical.  If the PIP benefits are exhausted, we can at that time submit the claim to your health insurance company.

     If you have an account balance, we will first send you an invoice.  We will then send you a statement for the next two months, if there is still an account balance.  On the third month, a statement along with a collection letter will be sent asking you to contact this office.  If you don't make a payment or contact the office after receiving the collection letter, your account is turned over to a collection processor.
