ACLS

Many of the calls run by CCEMS involve cardiac problems.  In

order to enhance the care provided, all MICT's are extremely

knowledgeable in Advanced Cardiac Life Support.   ACLS is a

highly specialized cardiac intensive training class that is widely

utilized in both pre-hospital and intra-hospital treatment.  The

American Heart Association created ACLS,  providing a panel of

cardiac specialists to create and maintain a high standard of medical

care in the event of a cardiac emergency.

Geared toward cardiac emergencies, ACLS is utilized by EMS

workers to treat and stabilize conditions that are potentially harmful

of lethal to the patient.  All MICT's at Crawford County EMS are

specialists in ACLS protocols.  Every year they review the standards

and familiarize themselves with new material exuded by the AHA.

This specialized training allows MICT's to provide the following:

The typical ACLS course is 16 classroom hours consisting of lecture

and practical skills stations.  The class cumulates in a written test and

a practical skills test.  EMT's  as well as MICT's, nurses, doctors and

other medical personnel can take ACLS class.

The equipment used in the practical skills stations is as realistic as

possible.  Highly sophisticated mannequins are utilized to detect and

simulate treatments and situations.   Cardiac monitors can be used on

the mannequins to simulate a real patient's reaction to each situation

and treatment.  Much of the actual equipment used on patients is used

on the mannequins to lend a realistic atmosphere to the classroom.

These specialized tools allow the best training for the best possible

care to the patient.  The concentrated training provided by ACLS

allows MICT's and EMT's to flawlessly execute the procedures

practiced when they are needed most to preserve life.
